“Well, I’m clearly fine now,” Jack grumbled and attempted to cross his arms over his chest, but the needle stuck in his hand stymied that.
He winced as the plastic tubing pulled taut. The short young blonde nurse who was clad in black scrubs took his hand and looked it over but sat it back down as she realized he hadn’t pulled the catheter out of his vein.
Jack’s big frame took up most of the gurney. He sat propped up, shirtless with IV tubing running out of his right hand, multiple leads on his chest that monitored his heart rate and rhythm, a blood pressure cuff on his arm and a pulse oximeter on his left middle finger. Despite all that, he looked as formidable as a cornered steed ready to buck off its rider.
Savannah could have laughed at his expression if she hadn’t been so shaken up still. She sat with her arm looped through her mother’s, who sat in a chair beside her father, her hand squeezing his bigger one.
“Jack, honey. They’re just making sure.” Savannah’s mother patted the hand she held.
“I know,” he mumbled and gave the skinny blonde nurse a weak smile.
“The doctor will be in shortly to discuss your test results, Mr. Kinsen. Can I get you anything?”
“Can I have somethin’ to drink?”
“Let me just make sure the doctor doesn’t have you NPO, but if not, what can I get you?”
“A water would be great.”
“Of course. Would anyone else like anything?” The patient girl asked.
Savannah, her mom, Dallie and Jackson all shook their heads and thanked the nurse as she exited through the curtain. Jackson had been the last to join them in the cramped ER bay. He was standing, propped against the wall, concern etched across his handsome young face. Dallie sat adjacent to their father’s bed, looking bored. All this medical stuff was nothing new to her.
Vanna sighed heavily, feeling the strain of the last three days taking its toll on her mind and body. Her butt hurt from sitting so long in a horribly uncomfortable plastic chair. She stood and offered her chair to her brother who just shook his head, his dusty black cowboy hat followed. She looked over at her dad and felt her eyes sting with fresh tears.
Watching the big mountain that was her father slowly crumble to the ground like that had completely shaken Savannah to the core. She’d feared the worst when Austin’s long fingers shoved into her father’s thick neck searching for a pulse. Less than six seconds passed before Austin sighed in relief.
“He’s ok,” he stated and looked up. “Go call an ambulance.”
And she had. And the wait had been nerve-wracking as she’d paced and awaited further instruction from Austin who’d propped her dad’s head and feet up with blankets. Although it hadn’t taken the ambulance long, Vanna was charged with the task of riding with her father while Austin followed in the jeep, grabbing her worried mom along the way.
Her dad had awoken with a start in the ambulance as the IV needle pierced his skin; he was quite disoriented.
